What Is Cataract Surgery?
Cataracts develop when the lens of your eye becomes cloudy. By removing the affected cloudy lens and replacing it with a custom-made clear lens, your vision should improve. While this might sound complex, the procedure is actually quite straightforward when performed by a trained ophthalmologist. The clouded lens is removed and replaced with an IOL (intraocular lens). In general, this IOL is a clear artificial lens that focuses light on the back of your eye (retina). The IOL is typically made of plastic, acrylic, or silicone.
Once the IOL is implanted into your eye, this lens begins to work in a similar fashion as your original natural lens did, but without obscuring your vision! Results typically include an overall improvement in the clarity of objects. Many patients also report a noticeable increase in perceiving the colors around them! Without the cloudiness of a cataract blocking your vision, your eyes will see the world in a new light.
When Can I See Results?
Once your IOL is implanted, it should begin doing its work relatively efficiently. With the cloudy lens replaced with the new clear IOL, your eyes will be able to pick up more light, providing overall improved vision.
Once your cataract surgery is finished, you can return home on the same day. However, you will need someone to drive you home on the day of your surgery. While your vision will initially appear bright, your vision clarity will gradually improve over the first several days. Some blurry vision and irritation early on are normal. During the following weeks, your eyes will heal and adjust to the IOL implant. You will need to wear a protective eye shield on your operative eye during the first two weeks after surgery. If you have any questions or concerns during this postoperative period, contact us and the Aloha Eye Clinic staff will do their best to address your concerns.
Will I Still Need Glasses?
There are different types of IOLs that can be implanted in the eye. Toric IOLs can correct for astigmatism (an irregular shape of the eye). Multifocal IOLs can give a person a greater range of vision. The need for glasses is largely dependent on the type of IOL that is implanted in a person’s eye. Some types of IOLs will reduce a person’s dependence on glasses. However, despite the type of IOL that is implanted in a person’s eye, it is still common to need to use glasses under certain circumstances, for example, to read the fine print.
Is Cataract Surgery Right for Me?
If a cataract is impairing your vision so that it interferes with your activities of daily living, then cataract surgery may be the solution for you.
When you come in for your consultation, we examine your eyes to see if cataract surgery is necessary. By using various testing modalities we will determine the type of IOL that will provide you with the best vision when cataract surgery is appropriate.
What If I Have Secondary Cataracts?
If you have already had cataract surgery, the membrane that holds the IOL in place in the eye can sometimes cloud up. This is called posterior capsular opacity or a secondary cataract. Although it is not a true cataract, this posterior capsular opacity or secondary cataract can significantly blur up the vision. If this happens to you, the secondary cataract can be corrected with a simple laser surgical procedure that can result in significant vision improvement.
