Laser Eye Surgeries in Maui
While the Aloha Eye Clinic does not currently do LASIK on Maui, we work with our colleagues on Oahu to provide this service and are able to do the post-operative follow-up visits here on Maui for people who have had LASIK surgery. However, we do offer various types of medical eye lasers here in Maui for different eye conditions.
Laser Eye Surgery for Diabetes
While the effects of diabetes on the various parts of the body are widely known, diabetes can have a significant impact on a person’s eyes. The condition is called diabetic retinopathy and it causes damage to the fine blood vessels in the retina (back of the eye). This damage can cause swelling and/or bleeding in the retina (back of the eye). While the symptoms can be mild for some patients, others may experience a significant decrease in vision. When appropriate, as part of your diabetic retinopathy treatment plan, we can use a special kind of procedure called a focal grid laser to reduce retinal swelling. Also, a laser procedure called pan-retinal photocoagulation can be used to reduce bleeding in the eye.
Laser Eye Surgery for Glaucoma
For patients with glaucoma, particularly open-angle glaucoma, we offer a laser treatment called selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT). This laser eye surgery for glaucoma works to help your eyes by increasing the drainage of fluid out of the eyes which results in the reduction of the overall pressure in the eyes. This procedure is most effective for certain types of open-angle glaucoma. If you have glaucoma we recommend having a consultation to learn what your treatment options are.
Narrow-angle glaucoma occurs when the drain of a person’s eye is narrow so the aqueous fluid has difficulty exiting the eye resulting in high eye pressures. A peripheral iridotomy (PI), which is performed to help treat narrow-angle glaucoma, works to keep the drain of the eye open.
Laser Eye Surgery for Secondary Cataracts
Normal cataracts can have a significant negative impact on your eyesight. This common eye disease occurs when the eye's natural lens becomes cloudy, thereby reducing vision. Cataract surgery entails removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with a clear artificial lens. Secondary cataracts occur after an individual has had cataract surgery and can cause similar symptoms, such as blurred vision, as your original cataracts. Secondary cataracts occur when the membrane that holds the new artificial intraocular lens in place clouds up. The only way to treat secondary cataracts is through a specialized laser eye surgery, called a YAG capsulotomy. This procedure is quite straightforward and has an excellent rate of success. In many cases, it takes only a few minutes and can deliver long-lasting improvements.
