Cataract & Surgery Center
Through nearly half a century of excellent full-service eye care, The Aloha Eye Clinic is perhaps revered most, in regards to its premiere cataract surgical services. Dr. Jivin Tantisira, the Medical Director of the Aloha Eye Clinic and a Yale Medical School graduate, is the most experienced eye surgeon on Maui specializing in cataract surgery, having performed more than 15,000 surgeries. Aside from Dr. Tantisira’s extensive knowledge and team of experts, the clinic offers the latest and most innovative technology to its beloved Maui community.
Manual Cataract Surgery
Accomplished by hand, manual cataract surgery utilizes advanced phacoemulsification technology (ultrasound or high-frequency sound waves) to break up and remove the cataract through a small 2.4mm (<1/8 inch) incision. These incisions typically do not require the use of a stitch to close them.
Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS)
For patients who want the latest in laser technology, the LenSx femtosecond laser is available. The Aloha Eye Clinic Surgical Center’s LenSx laser, which has the most advanced software, carries out some of the key steps of the cataract surgery procedure in a very precise, automated, and reproducible fashion. After using the LenSx laser, the cataract surgery is then completed utilizing phacoemulsification (high-frequency sound waves).
Premium Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) used to correct astigmatism and/or obtain a full range of vision.
In addition to employing the LenSx femtosecond laser technology, the Aloha Eye Clinic, and Aloha Eye Clinic Surgical Center offers the most advanced premium intraocular lenses (IOLs). Besides having the basic monofocal IOLs available for patients, the clinic’s cataract surgical service offers Toric IOLs that correct for astigmatism (irregular shape of an eyeball), and Accommodative IOLs and Multifocal IOLs which are designed to give a person more range of vision. The PanOptix is the only FDA-approved trifocal IOL that is designed to give a full range of vision (near, middle, and far). Dr. Tantisira has the most experience and expertise using the PanOptix on Maui.
The Aloha Eye Clinic is also the only surgical center on Maui that offers the ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis). The ORA is an advanced technology that takes real-time measurements of a patient’s eye during their cataract surgery procedure and helps to verify that the refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism) is appropriately corrected during the surgery to give the most optimal visual outcome.
